The Thousand and One Faces of Rome

Hi, I'm Lavinia Scafi, the creator and illustrator of this project.
Originally from Rome, after working as an architect in New York and Paris for several years, I decided to return and graphically portray the many faces of my magnificent city.

What is Er Romano?
It's the beautiful, ugly, and so-so sides of Rome, illustrated on the covers of an imaginary magazine.
Beyond its history, culture, and chaos, being Roman is a lifestyle.

With irony, sarcasm, and love, I tell stories of an authentic Rome, beyond the usual tourist clichés. I’m committed to representing the city as it truly is: fascinating and full of beauty, but also chaotic, complex, and imperfect.

In every illustration, I explore hidden corners, social themes, and small moments of everyday life.
With Er Romano, I want to offer a visual experience that makes people reflect and smile at the same time.
Each drawing is a personal reflection on the city, the result of careful attention to detail and a subjective interpretation.

Deeply in love with Rome, I critique the city with affection, hoping it will be appreciated and valued as it deserves, both within and beyond Italy’s borders.

My goal is to spread the true roman essence.

My illustrated stories will make you fall in love with Rome, one drawing at a time.

“Looking for a painting for a friend, I discovered “The Parisianer,” an imaginary magazine with real covers inspired by “The New Yorker.”
Since then, the walls of my 25 m² Parisian space have been invaded by postcards and posters.
« What a shame that the same thing doesn't exist for Rome... »
“And do it yourself, you’re an architect!”
